The Old Noon Day Gun of Kabul - Afghanistan

One of the Kabul Timeguns firing in 1974
Kabul's cannon were situated on Cannon Mountain between Demazan Park and Babur Shah Gardens, to the side of  Kohe Serdarwaza. The guns used to be fired at noon day and were manufacted by Mashin - Khana established by Amir Abdur Rahman in1887.

The AISK Photo Index shows many interesting pictures not only of the guns being loaded and fired, but includes the surrounding district. Magnificent high hills, spreading town houses and Parkland.

To pick only one item as an example is difficult , I chose the Column to Knowledge and Ignorance. Which was set up by King Amanullah after a rebellion in 1924-25. The names of those who fell in the struggle of knowledge meaning modernisation. Those who fought against them were traditionalists meaning ignorance are inscribed at the base of the monument on a rock.

The American International School of Kabul was built by the US Government through the Agency for International Development at a cost of $380,000.

The property, located on Darulaman Avenue about four miles out of Kabul, was made available by the Royal Afghan Government which also contributed six hundred thousand Afghanis for landscaping. By agreement between the two governments, the buildings will be transfered to the Afghan Government after 20 years. It is probable that this period could be extended.

Construction began in the spring of 1964... Not until February, 1965 were the buildings complete. The high school remained in its old quarters in Shauri-nau and the elementary school continued to occupy what is now the AID staff house. They were separate and distinct institutions. It was at the end of the first semester, 1964-65 school year, in mid-winter when the elementary and high schools were transfered to their unified new quarters under the collective aegis of AISK.

When the name American International School of Kabul was proposed, it was argued that one institution could not be American and international at the same time. It was countered that these two terms did, indeed, describe exactly what the founders had in mind. Although AISK is American in financial backing, control, and basic curiculum, it was very much the purpose of the founders to incorporate the international aspect of education. This concept was thought advisable in order to provide what was considered to be a better educational opportunity for members of the international community in Afghanistan. The two ideas coincide.

We have to thank Gerry Geronimo for his assistance in sending the pictures and information on the Kabul time gun. Also the privilege of being linked to The American International School of Kabul.
